Meyerbeer, Giacomo [originally Jakob Liebmann Meyer Beer] (1791-1864) German
composer of opera in Italian, German, and especially French, including Robert
the Devil, The Huguenots, The Prophet, The African Woman (L'Africaine). These
are noted for spectacle and for a striking use of the orchestra. Visited Italy;
settled in Paris 1826 and died there, was also active in Berlin from 1842 as
musical director to the King of Prussia. Also wrote church music, marches,
songs, etc.
